Training on Building Membership Based Organisations of Homebased workers”,
6th December- 9th December, Ahmedabad, India.
HomeNets (from South Asia) to Participate in SEWA Academy-led MBO Trainings
Representatives from five South Asian countries of HomeNet South Asia- Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka – will be attending a four day training program on membership-based organisations (MBOs) in Ahmedabad, India from 6th to 9th December, 2009. The Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) Academy Learning Hub will be in charge of the trainings for the HomeNet representatives.
The HomeNets are interested in learning more about membership-based organisations as part of their efforts of the ongoing Inclusive Cities Project. They are interested in encouraging their network organisations to strengthen the role of the members themselves and to be more directly responsive to their needs and desires; this is seen as resulting in more democratic and sustainable organisations. Through this process, the members also gain the confidence and ability to play key roles and run their own organisations.
The trainings will provide detailed information about SEWA’s long experience as a well-known MBO. The training would orient on various MBO models like Union, cooperatives, producer groups, and other types of organisations which comprise a wide range of informal women workers as members.
This training would convey the basis of development and progress through organizing and building workers' organizations The HomeNets in turn will contribute valuable perspectives based on their own country experiences, and will discuss how these lessons might be applied.
The workshop on “Impact and change on Homebased workers” was held on 7th & 8th September 09. It was jointly organized by HomeNet South Asia (HNSA) and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES).
The key objective of workshop was to study the impact of HNSA on the lives and livelihood of home based workers in the region. Specifically, this workshop built the mutual learning and experience sharing among the participants , underlined the changes that HNSA has been able to bring about in their lives, and identified the challenges that still remain.
The participants were from Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and Philippines. Homebased workers from these countries were also present.

Recently a
workshop on “Toward a National Policy on Homebased
Workers and the Ratification of C. 177”, was held
in Dhaka (Bangladesh) on March 3-4 2009.
The Venue was:
Summer Palace Hotel,
35, Suhrawardy Avenue,
Baridhara Model Town
Dhaka-1212, Bangladesh
The key objective of this Workshop was to analyse the
process of moving toward a National Policy on
Homebased Workers, and toward the ratification of the
ILO Convention 177 on Homebased Workers.
It is estimated that there are over 100 million
homebased workers in the world and over 50 million
homebased workers in South Asia alone, of whom around
80% are women. These workers contribute to their
country’s economic growth as well as provide crucial
income for their families and communities;
nonetheless, they remain amongst the poorest and most
exploited and vulnerable segment of workers today.
They are largely invisible due to their location and
gender, and in almost all countries are not at present
covered by any form of labour or social protection
legislation. Given their importance and circumstances,
the Delhi Charter 2007 has stated that a National
Policy on Homebased Workers should be one of the
components of the charter.
